Shouldn't it be spring?

I think you have all heard me complaining about the snow. So I should probably not do it here, too. All I'm going to say is... everyone needs to stop saying how pretty it is. It's not pretty anymore. Birds singing. That's pretty. Flowers coming up. That's pretty. Help me out! Encourage spring, not snow!

I also think you should all go to see the North Scott High School production of Ramona Quimby. The books by Beverly Cleary have been turned into a play. It should be very fun!

For Parents and Families

PBS is airing a special called "Growing Up Online" on Tuesday, January 22nd. We all need to educate ourselves about what our children could be doing online. This program looks like it will help. You can also visit the website to get a preview: http://www.pbs.org/frontline/kidsonline/

EDIT: I just got an email that if you go to this link, you can watch the entire show online. On the top right of the page, choose "Watch the Full Program Online" and then you can watch it chapter by chapter.

I'm so glad we're back. Wasn't that a nice break? It seemed very long to me.

I read a lot the last two weeks. I waited until all of you checked out and then took a whole bunch of books home. I loved the three that I read. Let me know if you'd like to hear about them.

My recommendations:
Rising Star of Rusty Nail (historical fiction)
Wing Nut (realistic fiction)
Gregor the Overlander (fantasy)

Battle of the Books will start soon. Will this finally be the year that Ed White takes the district prize trophy home? Battles will begin at the end of the month. Are you ready, teams? Remember that the Fact Tracker sheets are on the bookcase by my desk (next to the tissue box).

Ice Storm Coming?

Looking for something fun to do while you're stuck inside for the ice storm? Look at Robert Sabuda's website. He makes incredible pop-up books and has simple directions for making your own pop-up cards.

Holiday Gifts

If you are buying gifts for kids this year, consider some of these ideas that will keep them reading.

magazine subscriptions (so cool to get them in the mail)
their own library card (FREE!!!)
gift card to a bookstore (always better if they pick out the book)

Thank You!

I sure do say thank you a lot. I guess that's because a great library has a lot of help from lots of people! This thank you is for those of you who went to Barnes and Noble this Saturday to support our fund-raising event. I don't know how much money we will be getting yet, but the elementary libraries (5 of us) will be splitting the profits.

Have a great Thanksgiving!

Oh, wait! Do you want to know what I'm thankful for? I'm thankful that I get to work in a library with kids and teachers who are so wonderful. You take such good care of our books. You use great manners. I love it when you get excited about reading and tell me about the books you love. I'm thankful that I found the perfect job for me. Thank you for making the Ed White Library such a great place to be.
